UHV Helps Promote Math Awareness
Each year, the brightest young mathematics students gather at the University of Houston-Victoria for Math Awareness Day in observance of National Mathematics Awareness Month. The day-long event includes a mathematics contest, hands-on demonstrations, applications, Internet and software development workshops as well as video and lecture presentations.
Math Awareness Day is made possible through the collaboration of UHV, the Victoria College and the Alcoa Foundation. This collaboration allows area high school students to compete for medals in a mathematics contest as well as scholarships to the University of Houston-Victoria and to Victoria College.
Recognizing that stimulating young mathematical minds enhance the future workforce in the region, the Alcoa Foundation generously contributed $5,000. This was the Foundation's first year to partner with the university. The Alcoa Foundation's commitment to education reaches from the college campus to the factory floor by preparing students for challenging futures, by keeping workers current in new developments and by opening up the fields of business, engineering, science and technology to everyone.
This year, Yoo Yoo Yeh, a Victoria Memorial senior, received a $2,000 scholarship, and Calhoun High School's Catherine Wang received a $1,000 scholarship to UHV.
"We appreciate Alcoa Foundation's sponsorship of Math Awareness Day, which helps students become aware of the importance of mathematics in many fields of study as well as in everyday life," said Margaret Rice, UHV's Letting Education Achieve Dreams director.
